Detailed Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Virunga national park
Kigali to Virunga national park: Start your journey on day 1 of 6 days Virunga classic package with a pick up from Kigali Rwanda by our company representative who will then take you into a briefing about this 6 days package itinerary as you set off on a 5 hours’ drive to Immigration Office at Grande Barrie in Democratic Republic of Congo to check in and obtain your Congo Visa. However, remember to apply for a new Rwanda visa as the one you have expires the moment you step into Democratic Republic of Congo. After obtaining your Congo Visa, proceed to Virunga Tourism Offices to pick your Mountain gorilla trekking permits and Mount Nyiragongo Hiking permits. You will finally join the Convoy for the transfer to Mikeno lodge for check in and lunch. You may choose to spend your evening at leisure at your lodge or have a walk to explore around your lodge awaiting dinner and night sleep.

Day 2: First Mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga national park
1st Gorilla trekking in Virunga national park: Enjoy your breakfast in time on day 2 of 6 days Virunga classic package Congo at your Mikeno lodge, pack whatever is needed to ensure that you enjoy a fascinating experience with Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitats. You will then be transferred to Bukima ranger post where the trail head for gorilla trekking is located. You will meet rangers ready to brief you about gorilla trekking before finally penetrating into the forest to start the adventure as you search for the habituated mountain gorillas amidst tight security of armed rangers and local guides. You will move via different trails for about 2-5 hours until you finally meet with these primates in their natural habitats. Spend 1 hour in their presence taking photographs and closely interacting with gorillas then exit the forest back to Bukima Ranger post where you will meet with your safari driver and set off for a drive to Bukima Tented camp for a late lunch in case you never packed a lunch box. Your dinner and overnight will be here at Bukima Tented Camp awaiting the next day’s second gorilla trek inn Virunga national park.

Day 3: Second mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga national park
2nd Gorilla trekking in Virunga national park: After breakfast on day 3 of 6 days Virunga classic package Congo, meet your safari driver and be returned to Bukima Ranger post for yet another briefing before returning into the forest for a 2nd Gorilla trek in the wilderness of Virunga National park. Today, you will be able to trek a different Gorilla family for comparison purposes but in case you feel like trekking a similar family, let your ranger know in advance and you will surely get what you request for. As usual, spend 1 hour with Gorillas and after exit the forest to Mikeno Luxury lodge where you will enjoy spending time at Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage with the Gorillas that were rescued from poachers. Dinner and overnight sleep will be at Mikeno lodge a luxury lodge in Virunga national park.

Day 4: Free day
Free day at Mikeno lodge: Day 4 of 6 days Virunga classic package Congo is set aside for you to spend an entire day relaxed at the terraces of your Mikeno lodge. All meals will be served in time on full board basis.

Day 5: Mount Nyiragongo hike (Ascend)
Hike Mount Nyiragongo: Have your breakfast early in the morning on day 5 of 6 days Virunga classic package Congo then be transferred to Kibati Police post to join other hikers for a briefing. Briefing is conducted by experienced rangers who will take you through briefing about Nyiragongo, the hike, possible encounters during the hike and at the summit and many more. After briefing, by 10:00am, the Hike starts as you ascend the most active volcano in Virunga Massif. You will enjoy a stopover along the hike to enjoy your packed lunch ad well as relax abit and once you get to the summit, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the boiling lava lake as it glows even brighter in case it drizzles at night. You are free to take as many photographs as possible since you have an entire night all by yourself.
Day 6: Descend Mount Nyiragongo
Descend Mount Nyiragongo: Arise at the summit of Nyiragongo on day 6 of 6 days Virunga classic package Congo, have a cup of tea and meet other hikers ready to start descending back from the summit of Mount Nyiragongo back to Kibati police patrol where the hike started. Once you get back to Kibati, you will be picked by your safari driver/ guide and be returned to Kigali with an enroute lunch. While in Kigali, you may choose to have a city tour or be dropped off at a location of your choice.
