Weather and Climate of Akagera National Park : Akagera National Park is a protected area in eastern Rwanda covering 1,122 square kilometers and situated in the border with Tanzania. Akagera National Park was gazetted as a national park in 1934 and was named for the river that runs through it, the River Kagera. The park is encompassed of stunning landscape such as wetlands, lakes, savannah plains, and rolling hills. It is advised to take warm clothing for early morning or night game drives. Akagera’s Dry season is from June to September. The rainy season has two parts. The short rains are from October to December and the long rains are from March to May. Mid-December to mid-February tends to be a drier spell.
Dry Season–June to September
In Akagera National Park, the dry season brings very little rain. As the months go by, the plants start to thin out, and you’ll notice more animals gathering near the lakes and wetland areas. The weather is warm and enjoyable during this time, making it a great opportunity to observe wildlife.

These months mostly bring bright, sunny days filled with clear blue skies. However, when night falls, the temperature drops, often reaching around 16°C, making it feel chilly. Early mornings can also be a bit brisk, so it’s a good idea to have a light jacket or sweater handy.
In early September, the weather in Akagera National Park is typically dry. However, there’s a possibility that the short rains could begin at some point this month. Throughout this period, you can expect the temperatures to stay fairly consistent.
Wet Season–October to May
In the dry season at Akagera National Park, the weather tends to be warm. During the day, you can expect temperatures to reach 26°C (79°F), making its a comfortable time to explore the park. when while nighttime temperatures hover around 15°C (59°F). During the Wet season it rarely rains all day, but afternoon thundershowers can be expected. Between the short and long rains, there is often a period when the weather is drier.
During October, and sometimes even in September, the ‘short rains’ begin to fall. These rains typically don’t last all day; instead, you can expect brief showers in the afternoon. When it comes to temperatures, you’ll usually find it warm during the day, around 25°C or 77°F. However, as night falls and in the early morning, it cools down to about 16°C or 61°F.
January and February are usually drier months. This period falls between the shorter rains of December and the longer rains that come later. However, it’s hard to say exactly when this dry spell will happen since it can vary from year to year.
