New Gorilla Families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park 2024 : The new gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park opened for tracking early this year 2024, January 17th. The opening up the newly habituated mountain gorilla families in Uganda was announced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority ‘’UWA’’ and this can be visited during your Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safaris.

These new mountain gorilla families before releasing them for tourism have been under the training process of a team of trackers and researchers for over four years. They are divided in four gorilla sectors; Buhoma sector, Rushaga sector, Nkuringo and Rushaga sector.

Buhoma sector – also has the new gorilla families, the Bunyindo and Muyambi gorilla families.

Rushaga sector – has the Rwigi Gorilla family and the Tindatine gorilla family.

Nkuringo sector – has the Posho gorilla family.

Thus, making a total of 5 new gorilla families introduced at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Through introduction of these new gorilla families in Bwindi Gorilla Sectors, visitors should expect to experience more tracking opportunities, that brings them closer and faster to one of the groups.

More to that, the introduction of these new families means that Uganda Wildlife Authority ‘’UWA’’ now releases 194 daily gorilla tracking permits for tracking the ‘’24 gorilla families’’- it has increased from the 19 families to 24 gorilla families in regard of 5 gorilla families, which can be visited on Uganda Gorilla Safari Tours respectively.

Note; The Uganda Wildlife Authority also informed the public and tour operators that they will no longer release extra permits, whether it is a peak season or a low season. Therefore, we recommend visitor wishing to do gorilla trekking to book the gorilla permits early enough to plan accordingly for the trip.

Rushaga Gorilla Family

There are two new mountain gorilla families introduced in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi. They include; the Rwigi gorilla family and the Tindatine gorilla family.

Rwigi gorilla family

The Rwigi Gorilla family is new gorilla group found in Rushaga sector of Bwindi National Park.

This gorilla family split from the Kahugye gorilla family and the family was named after their silverback leader –Rwigi.

Rwigi gorilla family has 6 members, through booking a Uganda gorilla permit- you can visit the Rwigi Gorilla family in Bwindi forest.

Tindatine Gorilla Family

The tindatine gorilla family broke off from the Shongi Gorilla family.

New Gorilla Families in the Buhoma sector;

These are Muyambi gorilla family and Bunyindo gorilla family

Muyambi Gorilla Family

The Muyambi Gorilla Family is composed of about 8 members, and Muyambi is their group leader.

Muyambi was a member of the Mubare gorilla group, which split from the group in 2019.

Bunyindo Gorilla family

This gorilla group is leader by Bunyindo.

New Gorilla Families in the Nkuringo Sector

There was one mountain gorilla family in the Nkuringo sector, named as posho gorilla family.

Posho Gorilla Family

The Posho gorilla family is led by Magara silverback. It has 14 members includes black backs, adult females, juveniles and infants.

The new gorilla families have been introduced in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the old gorilla families are also available for tracking the different sectors of the park, that is Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and the Ruhija sectors.

Gorilla families in the Ruhija sector;

There are no new gorilla families in the Ruhija sector, found in the east of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. However, the old Gorilla families in the sectors include the; Bitukura Gorilla Family, Kyaguliro, Oruzugo, Mukiza gorilla family.

Other gorilla families in the Rushaga sector;

The Rushaga sector has 9 gorilla families, but with the introduction of 2 newer gorilla families, making up a total of11 mountain gorilla families. These include; Nshongi troop ,Mishaya ,Bweza, Bikyingi ,Kahunge ,Busingye ,Mucunguzi ,Kutu, Rwigi ,Tindatine gorilla group.

Other gorilla families in the Buhoma sector;

The other mountain gorilla families in the Buhoma sector include; Mubare, Rushegura, Muyambi, Habinyanja and Katwe gorilla families. Additionally, Bunyindo gorilla family and the Buyambi gorilla family make a total of 7 fully habituated gorilla families in the Buhoma sector.

Other gorilla families in the Nkuringo sector;

The other gorilla families in Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park include; Nkuringo, Bushaho, Christmas, and Posho gorilla family.

What is the best season to go gorilla trekking?

The dry season makes it the best time to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. From June to September and December to February. Why drier season, it is because   tracking trial are less challenging for tourists than in the wet season, when the trail heads are muddy and slippery.
