Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Chimpanzee habituation experience is an incredible once life time experience that involves joining habituation research team as they carry our daily assignment of making a community of chimpanzees accustomed to human visits. This is an interesting experience for researchers as well as photographers who would love to spend   more time with the chimpanzees. For half a day tourists participating in the CHEX activity will need to secure a chimpanzee habituation permit. The activity starts with a briefing at the park headquarters, however, this is whole day activity and once you find the them, your given 4 hours to spend with them get to learn about their behaviors and take unforgettable pictures.


There are over 370 bird species recorded in Kibale National Park including one of the Uganda’s most sought after birds –the Green breasted pitta. While birding ,you will be accompanied by one of the expert ranger guides to the park .List of birds to see includes; Western nicator ,Green –breasted pitta ,Little greenbul ,Afep pigeon ,African pitta, Dusky Crimson wing ,Red-faced Woodland Warbler ,Black –capped Apalis ,Collared Apalis ,Blue-headed and Purple-breasted Sunbird ,Nahan’s Francolin ,Blue-headed Bee-eater, Cassin’s Spine tail ,Masked Apalis, Papyrus Gonolek ,Black –headed Gonolek ,Great –Blue Turaco ,Red-fronted Tinker bird ,Yellow –breasted Apalis ,Double –toothed Barbet ,Black-billed Barbet ,Yellow-Billed Barbet ,Papyrus Canary and Yellow –spotted Nicator among others.

Nature Walks

Besides doing chimpanzee trekking, you can engage in the park’s nature walks to discover some of its residents including mammals. Other features like duikers, forest hogs, butterflies and the rich vegetation. You will also be able to spot several amphibian and reptile species come along population of African forest elephants. You can opt to do night walks where you will have a chance to see some of the nocturnal animals such as bush babies, tree hyraxes and civets.

Chimpanzee tracking

Kibale National Park is top visited because of its highest population of chimpanzees and ranks the best place to track wild chimpanzees in earth. Chimpanzee tracking is the ultimate activity for visitors who visit the park. There are two sessions to do chimpanzee tracking in Kibale- one can choose from either a morning or afternoon trek both beginning with a necessary briefing and led by an expert ranger guide.

The trek can last from 2 to 5 hours depending on where the animals are on a particular day. Chimp trekking is limited to 6 tourists per group to spend an hour with a community of chimpanzees. Take note; Nobody can engage in chimpanzee tracking safaris – you will need a chimpanzee permit which must be booked in advance.

Cost of Uganda Chimpanzee Permits;

Chimpanzee tracking permits costs USD200 per person, chimpanzee habituation experience costs USD250 per person per trek.

Community Visit

Kibale National Park lies in one of the most culturally interesting spot in Uganda. Tourists on visit here can easily combine a chimpanzee tracking with a visit to the Bigodi swamp area or with community walk through one of the tree plantations, pay a visit to the caves at Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru including a visit to King’s palace ‘’Kingdom of Toro’’.

Accessibility; Kibale National Park can be accessed through different routes; from Kampala via Fort portal to the park takes 5 to 6 hours’ drive.

Alternatively, you can opt to use a domestic scheduled flight to fly you to Kasese Airstrip ‘’50 minutes’’ and then be transferred to the park in less than 2hours drive.
