This activity involves searching for chimpanzees in their natural habitat and once found you will spend one hour with them, learning about their stunning lifestyle, behavior, feeding diet, and hunting as well as taking memorable photography. In Uganda chimpanzees trekking is done in different destinations namely; Kibale Forest National Park, Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park, Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kalinzu forest in Busenyi district, and Toro Semuliki Wildlife reserve.

Uganda is famously known as the primate kingdom hosting over 5,000 individuals of chimpanzees and the biggest number of them is found in Kibale Forest National Park. However, Kibale National Park alone is renowned as the capital of primates with over 1,500 individual chimpanzees and home to around 13 primates species including; Grey-cheeked Mangabey, Blue monkeys, Olive Baboons, Vervet Monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, Black and white colobus monkeys, Red tailed monkeys and most sought primates chimpanzee species after gorillas.

Chimpanzee trekking is a fabulous life-changing activity done in a beautiful natural environment. The activity starts early in the morning with a briefing about the do’s and don’ts at the park headquarters. After the briefing, you will be grouped and then later head out into the forest trails to look for them. Chimpanzee trekking can take 30 to 5 hours depending on their movements. As your trek, you will be able to sightsee other species like small primates, beautiful butterflies, and various notable bird species hovering around the sky such as; the Abyssinian ground thrush, little greenbul,white-naped pigeon, Green-breasted pitta, Brown-chested alethe, Dusky Crimsonwing, Red-faced woodland warbler, Black-capped Apalis, Collared Apalis among others.

Once the chimpanzees are located, you will be allowed an hour to spend with chimps in their habitat as you watch and learn how they hunt, feed, breastfeed, play, and take photos among others.

Hiking Boots

For travelers planning to go for a chimpanzee trekking tour, you need to carry hiking boots that support your ankles and protect you from fire ants as well as make hiking easy especially during the wet season when the forest trails are muddy and slippery.

Garden gloves; This item helps in protecting your hands from sharp branches, itching plants, and germs. This is because chimpanzee trekking is done in the thick tropical rainforest with slippery terrain, therefore you’re advised to carry hand gloves for your safety.

Insect repellent

Insect repellent is also required on chimpanzee trekking safaris because they protect you from biting insects like safari ants, tsetse flies many more.

Waterproof rain jacket/Poncho

You should carry a light waterproof rain jacket or poncho when going for a chimpanzee trekking safari.  It protects you from rainfall because it can rain at any time of the day.

Long-sleeved shirt and trousers

This is a useful item that helps to carry your items like personal documents, packed lunch, mineral drinking water, rain jacket, insect repellent, camera, and extra batteries among others.

Sunglasses and a hat

The hat and sunglasses help you to protect yourself from many sunrays, especially during the dry season.

A pair of binoculars

A pair of binoculars helps you to view species in far distances such as birds, mammals many more.

Walking stick

A walking stick offers support and balance especially during the wet seasons when the forest ground is muddy and slippery.

Best time to go for chimpanzee trekking safaris in Uganda

Chimpanzee trekking safaris is best done during the dry season starts from June to September and December to February. Although, it can also be done in the wet season, and during the wet season lodges lows the prices and few people in the park.
