Buhoma Gorilla Trekking | Bwindi National Park Gorilla Sector

Buhoma Gorilla Trekking: Buhoma is popularly known as the major and first visited gorilla family among the other three gorilla families Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo, all found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park that sits in Kanungu district, estimating an 8- to 9-hour drive to access the main destination.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the main stopping area for a fabulous gorilla trekking experience. Therefore, Buhoma was the first gorilla group to be officially opened for gorilla tourism in 1993, which implies that the Buhoma region has the oldest habituated gorilla family in the entire Bwindi Impenetrable National park and the first family to be trekked was called the Mubare group.

Currently it has 9 members and this number is because of Ruhondeza’s death, who passed away in 2013. Ruhondeza grew older and became too weak to defend the family, though he remained the leader “silverback.”

By the time of Ruhondeza’s death, the family had only four members and after his death, the new silverback embarked on an aggressive campaign against other gorilla families to tune up to nine members. Due to the new silverback, the family started gaining in numbers.
