How many lakes are in Uganda? Uganda is a landlocked country as we all know it has no sea port but the country is blessed with a very beautiful nature and besides the beautiful nature, the country also is ranked to be one of the greatest lakes regions in Africa.

Lake Victoria.

Lake Victoria is a lake that simply speaks for itself and this is because the lake is famously known as the largest lake in the country and also the source of the longest river which is the river Nile, and the great Victoria covers a total surface area of about 59,947 square kilometers.

Lake Victoria is the world’s second largest freshwater body that crosses more than two countries with 6% covering a surface area of about 4,100 square kilometers, 45% in Uganda, and 49% in Tanzania where it covers a total surface area of about 33,700 square kilometers among others.

Lake Albert.

Lake Albert is situated in an elevated area of 619 meters (2,031 feet) above the sea level and it is about 51 meters deep and about 19ml wide. The great Lake Albert is the seventh largest lake in Africa and it is considered the second biggest lake in Uganda. This lake is also about 160 kilometers long and about 30 kilometers wide.

Lake Kyoga.

Lake Kyoga is the swampiest and most shallow lake in Uganda and covers a total surface area of about 1,720 square kilometers elevated about 1,033 meters above the sea level. And about 5.7 meters deep, the lake is surrounded by many papyrus reeds and covered with water lilies. And also, home to so various bird species that are stunning to view as they fly into the skies.

Lake Gorge.

Lake Gorge is commonly referred to as Lake Dweru covering a total surface area of about 250 square kilometers and one of the most stunning lakes in Uganda despite it not being ranked to be among the great lakes, the lake remains with its prestige of beauty.

Lake Bunyonyi.

Lake Bunyonyi is the most famous lake known for birding adventures in the pearl of Africa, the lake is also a place of many little birds, it is located in the Southwestern region of Uganda between districts like; Kabale and Kisoro. The lake is one of the deep lakes in the country about 900 meters deep which also makes it known as the second deepest lake in Africa after Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania.

This is the smallest freshwater body found in the county lake located in Masaka district within the central region of the country known to be a satellite lake of Lake Victoria because it is about 4 kilometers away from the lakeshores of Victoria.

Lake Wamala.

Lake Wamala covers a total surface area of about 250 square kilometers famously known to be a traditional lake and cultural significance to the people of Buganda within the central region of Uganda.

Lake Wamala is a wetland that acts as a good natural habitat for many species such as; Sitatunga, which is commonly referred to as “enjobe” in the Luganda language.

Lake Kwania.

Lake Kwania is one of the lakes in Uganda that is not commonly thought of when it comes to the most common and famous lake in Uganda but still, it is a lovely lake in Uganda covering a total surface area of about 540 square kilometers found in the Lira district within the Northern region in Uganda.

One thing about this lake is that the lake has a large part of a wetland which is a great birding destination to visit while sightseeing the lake, and this wetland is situated along the White Nile between Lake Victoria and Lake Albert.
