The main intention of opening up these new gorilla families by the Uganda Wildlife Authority is to address the high demand for gorilla trekking tickets. Uganda Wildlife Authority has been issuing 8 gorilla trekking permits for each gorilla family with a total of 104 gorilla permits daily which were insufficient to meet the demand by tourists. As additional to the already existing gorilla families, the newly declared gorilla families opened to receive visitors are Christmas and Katwe and they are both found in Bwindi impenetrable national park but in different sectors of Nkuringo for Christmas and Buhoma for Katwe.

There can never be any more interesting news to tour operators and gorilla trekking fanatics than opening up new mounting gorillas groups of Christmas and Katwe, the new families have undergone through the gorilla habituation process for three years. The habituation process is carried out by specialists/ professionals as a way of making wild mountain gorillas be comfortable with the presence of people.
