Rhino Tracking in Uganda; In Uganda Rhino tracking can only be done in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located about 176 kilometers away from Kampala on the Gulu Highway heading north towards Murchison Falls National Park. Travelers driving north, you should turn left at the Nakitoma Trading Centre.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a famous home of the only white rhinos in Uganda, situated in Nakasongola district and also home to variety of bird species and other wildlife. The wildlife ranch has become a renowned safari destination for travelers looking for nature adventure. The sanctuary offers incredible activities such as Rhino trekking, birding tours mature hikes, night time and a shoebill trek as well as canoe ride.
Despite the fact that, Rhinos were threatened through poaching in those decades but currently the re-introduction project between Rhino Fund Uganda and the Roy family. They had to re-introduce six species of southern white rhinos to Ziwa in 2006. Since then, the number had increased to 26 through successful births and has we talk the sanctuary make a total number of about 32 species of Rhinos.

Activities to do at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Rhino trekking; This is a rewarding wildlife experience done by the armed guide who will guide you through the bush to wherever the rhinos are at the time. Well, this adventure is a great opportunity to experience it as you sight view these endangered unique creatures in their natural habitat. They can freely roam around the 27 square miles within the ranch; therefore, it is very difficult to drive to their nature inhabitant. The best way is trek on foot.

Bird watching
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary it’s not only a popular place for Rhino trekking but also for bird enthusiasts around the world. There are over 300 species of birds which can be spotted around woodlands, swamps and savannah. There are four different bird trails in the ranch that rewards with various bird species such as; Crested crane, shoebill stork mentioned few as well as encountering mammal species like warthogs, Kobs, monkeys many more.
Shoebill trek; You can do the shoebill trek which is best done early morning by canoe ride on the Lugogo swamp to watch the sunrise and spotting of the nesting shoebill storks. You will also get opportunities of viewing other water bird species . The activity can take about 4 hours, starts at 6am till 9am.
Take note; Before taking a canoe through the swamps, you will be briefed by our skilled trained rangers. The floating through the swamps whilst the sun rises is an experience like no other.
